“Gday, I am Max Leersen, a 16-year-old student who goes to Trinity College Colac.
I mainly create ‘scrap metal’ sculptures using bits and pieces I have collected over the years as well as from generous people donating stuff as well, to then weld them together to form the idea that I had pictured in my head.
I learnt to weld through having to work on and fix my Junior Sedan racecar that I have been racing for the past 4 years, starting off with dads old Arc welder that had been sitting in the back shed for years.
After a few months of using the old Arc, it decided its days were over and blew up… We then found an old Mig Welder and I began to learn the basics of that.
Starting to get into the sculpture welding, the first item I had made was a simple dog which I gifted to mum. Made out of old car parts (Spring, Cogs, Sump Filter) I spent a couple hours sitting out in the garage putting it together, with no plan other than the image I had in my head.
Since then I have created an assortment of sculptures, from simple things as ‘long living’ presents, such as Flowers and Trophies, to Bigger more difficult things, like my Guitar that I had entered into the 2024 Birregurra Art Show that had LEG/RGB lighting through the back, to a Kangaroo & Emu for my pops front garden.”
