Funds raised from the 2021 Art Show have been well utilised to support local initiatives. This year we have supported Studio 92, a not-for-profit inclusive gallery and community art space in Colac. With funds provided they were able to hold a series of 3 workshops.
The workshops provide paid opportunities for local artists and aim to increase the profile of and visitation to Studio 92 exhibitions in Colac’s Murray Street.
On Thursday the 17th of November, Studio 92 welcomed Penelope from BARKING SPIDER CREATIVE into the gallery space. Starting with simple materials; sand, salt, soil, Penelope led the group through a magical morning where participants’ imaginations uninhibited and whole worlds were created. Working with found natural materials like pinecones and river rocks, this was an activity that could be replicated at home as all the materials are entirely natural and free to collect in nature.
Penelope encouraged the group to work collaboratively, something unusual for the participants who often work individually. Standing back and observing their creations, participants imagined themselves shrinking in size and exploring the terrain with all its tactile qualities.
What participants said:
“I really liked it, we used our imaginations to make something different, lots of different worlds. One looked like Bali.”
" Flowers, Bushes. Patting sand down smooth. Salt with the feathers and trees, the birds. Sprinkle on (salt). Put the feathers on the side. Cone trees. Make with sticks. Make bridges on the side. They’re making the rest. Sprinkle on. Talk about it."
“Desert, snow, rainforest, oasis, Zen garden.”
Special Thanks go again to Studio 92’s Rachel King for organising the workshops.
